I selected cool weather hearty vegetables like peas, turnips, spinach, radishes and lettuce, but I also planted beets. The beets survived the winter and we enjoyed our first beets on April 4th of 2012.
The green beans actually survived the first couple of frosts, but when the weather got cold during the day, they died. One of my problems was the open ends, but the open ends also allowed air circulation so it didn't get to hot on warmer days. The bush peas died suddenly - whether from cold or heat, I couldn't say.
